I Just did this in June.  I stayed 1 week at Escapees in Livingston, and that wasn't enough time.  All the vehicle stuff got done in 2 days, but the Texas DPS, only takes appointments now, and the closest one was a week later and 50 miles away.  Also it took 5 weeks to get new Texas titles.

You have to remember that many places are operating on reduced staff and hours of operation.  Things are now taking longer than in the past.  Just be patient and it will get done.

Save yourself the time, stress and hassle. Use the Escapees South Dakota address and you don’t need any special license. Only requires a one night stay anywhere in the State, hotel or campground. You can also renew your registration via the mail with no inspection required.

The test for the class A or B class license is not that hard or that inconvenient.  Frankly, if you can't pass the test, you need to hang up the keys.

Also, the annual inspection is a non issue if you are out of state, you simply mark the box that you are out of state and get the stickers mailed to you.  You then have 72 hours once you reach your destination in Texas to get the inspection on your return.

Yes, it may be delays in getting the license and tags done due to reduced staffing with the COVID19, but it can get done.  But expect delays anywhere in the country.  After the bike rally, I don't think SD will be safe now.

There are racks made that attach to the rear ladder, if you have a rear ladder... As I recall, the bike then hangs vertically, which would allow you to tie it to the ladder at several points, giving more security and peace of mind. A 1.5" hitch with adapter is certainly a weak point for that much leverage and weight. You can also use that type hitch mount, but then attach a strap from each outside corner to an attachment point on the camper, relieving much of the weight and strain on the hitch connection. etrailer.com is a good resource for bike mounts, etc. Jay

We have had two friends try to haul bikes on the ladder carriers.  In both cases, the ladder was pulled loose damaging the RV.  One of them lost his bike.  The ladders were not meant to carry that kind of dynamic loading.

I would try the adapter to the 2" receiver.

  4. We have been full time for a bit over 7 years now and we went in to pretty much non-travel mode and only going out for groceries and the occasional take out food,  since February.  We have had to travel to near Tulsa for surgery for our Dog and then up to Kansas for some trailer repair and maintenance.  Then we will go back to Livingston and back to Houston for our annual Doctors' visits, provided they are doing them.  My last Doctors visit was a video visit.

We have not seen our daughter and her family since last December.  Our son-in-law is a nurse practitioner in an emergency care clinic and is subject to exposure daily.  We do get to visit with them on video calls.

We never expected to see anything like this mess in our lifetime and I want that lifetime as long as possible.  We are planning to be reasonably near medical facilities as much as possible but avoid using them.

Our volunteering is on complete hold so that we can social distance.

    Y'all stay safe.

  5. I am all for tightening up the control on any and all political comments not specifically related to RVs.  There is getting to be too much snipping at each other from both parties.  People have already made up their minds and what ever you say, they will not change.  The extreme right and the extreme left are getting too polarized.

I decided to drop off the Facebook SKP- Escapees because of the off handed political jabs until after the election.  Let's keep it civil here and all get along together.

  6. We spent 3 months at Port O'Connor, TX and won't do that again.  We had salt water or salt water marshes on 3 sides of us.  I rinsed the 5er off every other week and still we had problems with the salt.  Metal pitted and locks required lubrication.  The Winegard antenna had to be replaced.  When I replace it, I opened up the head on it, the board had severe corrosion.  I guess if you are a few miles  from the coast, the salt will not be such an issue, buy we won't have the RV back that close to salt water again.

  7. You will need to add a DPH42 switch and a solo hub to use the Hopper 3 with the Traveler.  There are several videos on the internet describing the process.  Be sure and unplug the Hopper when traveling.

I elected to stay with my VIP612 and 211Z as long as possible.

There are zero portable automatic antennas that work with the Hopper.

  8. I am not so interested in petting your dog unless it is friendly and I ask first.  My big peeve is the people that are too good to pick up their dog poop.  Where we are now has a nice dog yard, bags are provided and very well spelled out dog rules posted.  Always someone is above the rest of us and will not scoop their poop.

  9. It is sad that there are a few that ruin the good things for the many.

As for Walmart for oil changes and tires, I will not let them touch my vehicles.  After they messed up my Mom's car on an oil change and tire balance and rotation.  The tires were not balanced and they stripped the oil plug and over tightened the oil filter.  She went to get her car and it was not where they told her it was.  The moron left the keys in it and did not put it in park or set the E-brake.  It rolled down hill and over a curb into a field.  They did pay for a front end alignment as it went over a curb to get into the field.

  10. After having a class A with hydraulic levelers, our next class C did not have them.  After two trips, we had the HWH system installed .  Out last two 5ers have had auto Big Foot levelers.

You can get by with out levelers and use plastic blocks if on a hard surface or 2 x 8 boards to level for all surfaces.  We find that there are a fair number of sites that need blocks to get close to level.  Lots of class C units, set a couple of inches low in the front and need to be be raised even on a level pad.

Hydraulic levelers are very nice and expensive.  I guess it depends on how lazy you are.

Read your fridge manual and you will see that it has to be within so many degrees of level as operating off level will damage the RV fridge.

Also, turn off the CAPS lock key.  On the internet it is likened to shouting.

  11. For us, when the weather is HOT,  the very first thing is get the electric on and the A/C operating.  The we chock the RV wheels, disconnect from the truck and then auto level the 5er.  Next the slides go out.  The wife is walking the dog.  After the trailer is level, deploy the Winegard Traveler antenna,  Next comes water hook up and finally the sewer.  The sewer is the last thing on the list as that can wait a few days.

  12. I would go ahead and get set up with a LIvingston address.  Polk county does not require emissions testing on vehicles and insurance is cheaper than Harris county.

When I retired, I had already set up the Livingston address  while the house was for sale.  It sold, we moved into the RV and I worked from an RV park in north Houston.  This was about 3 months and we hit the road.  We were already native Texans.  All the vehicles were already registered in Harris county.  As soon as we sold the house, we changed all addresses to Livingston.
