SuiteSuccess
Noticed on recent trip water dripping in upper right corner of windshield after heavy rain while truck parked. Examined seal and visual looks ok. Called local glass shop and they don’t do trucks but suggested may not be windshield. Suggested using water hose on cab and windshield to see if I can locate. My 2006 Volvo 780 has the “outside visor” over the windshield and that’s where cab lights are located, not penetrating cab. Suggestions on locating leak and likely source? What about moon roof, likely source? 2006 Volvo 780 "Hoss" Volvo D12, 465hp, 1650 ft/lbs tq., ultrashift Bed Build by "JW Morgan's Custom Welding" 2017 DRV 39DBRS3 2013 Smart Passion Coupe "Itty Bitty" "Don't go around saying the world owes you a living. jkoenig24
It's AMAZING just how far water can travel from the point of entry to where it becomes noticeable inside. You're lucky that it's visible at the top of the windshield. That should narrow down the possibilities. Would your whisper tool detect the sound of moving water? If not, maybe you can have someone outside blow air across the windshield while you check inside with the whisper tool. Good luck!

Was wondering if whisper might be as effective as water hose. Will put DW outside with hair dryer after test first on my pickup to make sure no false positives. 2006 Volvo 780 "Hoss" Volvo D12, 465hp, 1650 ft/lbs tq., ultrashift Bed Build by "JW Morgan's Custom Welding" 2017 DRV 39DBRS3 2013 Smart Passion Coupe "Itty Bitty" "Don't go around saying the world owes you a living. jkoenig24
I'd wonder if the noise from a hair dryer would overpower the sound of leaking air. I think I'd try a long air hose (so that the compressor noise is a good distance from where you're testing).
Sculptor
Hi Carl, A few years ago I was at the Mack plant watching them install front and rear glass. The steel cab variation was pretty large. They had to work to get the rubber seal and glass to cover the steel. Can you measure the right side then measure the left side to see if the rubber is cockeyed in the opening? It would suggest whether or not the rubber seal is the problem. I hope it helps. beyerjf
Keep track of things like when it does and does not leak and under what conditions. Is the truck level, either side to side, or front to back, or does it leak more when parked with that side lower./ higher. Does it leak going down the road in a rainstorm? How much does it leak? If it isn't too big a deal, a towel on the dash and let it get moist. But if it drips on your head while your driving, well, you might want to do something about it. I don't think there is an RV or a heavy duty truck made that doesn't leak. Just like every boat/ship ever put in the water leaks. It then becomes a matter of managing the situation. Good luck. Jemstone
Well Jeff, I must respectfully disagree with you. Maybe I’ve been lucky with our Volvo 730, but if we were to be hit with a strong Oregon Coast storm we would stay in the Volvo. It has never leaked a drop that I’ve seen, and we have been in several storms with “sideways rain”. Additionally, my wife and I have been on the road for six months each year for the past 12 years. In that time we have owned four 5’vers; two Carridge units, a Landmark from Heartland and for the last four years a Lifestyle 38’ four season 5’ver. Lifestyle was the short lived successor company to Carridge - most of the same management team. The unit is the equal to our Carridges and none of the units ever leaked. I do have roof treatments and recoatings at recommended intervals. We had the Heartland unit a short time, during which the suspension totally failed. The roof did not have time to fail. I wish you a dryer future. John McLaughlin, currently roosting in Coos Bay, Oregon. Wrknrvr
I would try a water hose starting from the lowest point that the water was visible. Doing it with a garden hose and moving over the area slowly so to give it time to show up. Then slowly move up and over. Now when looking for a leak on a RV I would let it sit and spray the area for maybe an hour or more. Dependent on the leak size. Attach the hose to a ladder and give it time to show up if it is a slow drip. Now if the windshield is leaking you may just have a new windshield installed if the glass has any defects. Just my thoughts,. Vern
Wrknrvr
If a small small leak is not noticed it can cause quit a mess in time. like finally getting down to the floor under the maps and rusting. Just saying,. Vern
SuiteSuccess
Thanks folks for the discussion. Gonna try the air thing with Whisper and if not successful, go to garden hose. Is anyone aware if there are any “pro” services that could find it if I can’t? Don’t want to just go in and have windshield replaced or reset if that’s not the source. Also, as Vern said, don’t want to let it continue. 2006 Volvo 780 "Hoss" Volvo D12, 465hp, 1650 ft/lbs tq., ultrashift Bed Build by "JW Morgan's Custom Welding" 2017 DRV 39DBRS3 2013 Smart Passion Coupe "Itty Bitty" "Don't go around saying the world owes you a living. noteven
A pro device our techs would use is a bit of car wash or dish soap. Close the cab up tight, pressurize with the hvac blower and add water mist like wrknrvr says ^, mist a bit of soap solution on suspect areas on the outside watch for bubbles,, think like water, do csi with powerful flashlights... SuiteSuccess
Update. Tried using air and Whisper all along windshield with long length of airline. Didn’t really work well even though compressor was well away. Also tried using soap and misting while using compressed air from the inside where I was spraying. Again no joy. Plan C is to take home and get the water hose after it. If that fails may have to find a place with a smoke machine. Wife was wondering if it could have just been condensation. We were in Savannah then South Carolina and temps and humidity both in 90’s. I turned air on full blast to cool truck as I was breaking down trailer and when I climbed up in cab was when I noticed about tbsp of water drip down along visor and A pillar. Anyway don’t want a leak to persist so will keep sleuthing. 2006 Volvo 780 "Hoss" Volvo D12, 465hp, 1650 ft/lbs tq., ultrashift Bed Build by "JW Morgan's Custom Welding" 2017 DRV 39DBRS3 2013 Smart Passion Coupe "Itty Bitty" "Don't go around saying the world owes you a living. adept99
Hey Suite: We do have an occasional issue with condensation on the passenger side windshield and prior to that, an issue with a leak on the same side and area. Had the windshield replaced after a DOT inspection (my choice) & stopped the leak, but the condensate buildup still occurs sometimes. Best advice I got (after the laughter died down) is to seal the cab up as tightly as you can. Turn the HVAC off but leave the front and rear fans on full blast. Using a heavy soap mixture, spray the windshield from the outside and look for bubbles. You can also try gas leak detector solution or kid's bubble solution. Since the volume of the leak, if any, is so low, be patient and give it time to blow a bubble. If it turns out to be the condensate, either redirect the airflow or reduce the volume. BTW - our windshield replacement was $146 bucks cash, in our driveway, no insurance involved. Av8r3400
I wish you would have asked at the ECR, Carl. (I'm in the windshield business.) We could have had you fixed up in 10 minutes. A small cap bead (1/8" or less) where the glass meets the rubber gasket will fix the issue. This is very common on Volvos.
