rickeieio
I know it's here somewhere, but try as I might, I cannot find the info on replacing the tilt wheel cable on our truck, a '01 Volvo. I recall it being discussed, and tried doing several searches, but have come up empty. I have it most of the way apart, but was hoping to avoid going too far. I'd heard these were a bit difficult, but it's far worse than expected. I think a retired John Deere enjinear designed this. lappir
Mine broke about a week after I got my truck. Henry had just changed his and said he would never do it again. Took mine to a Volvo dealer in Missouri who did the job and a few other things for $200. I was happy, been a few years now though price most likely has gone up. I waited about 4 hours for the job to be done. rickeieio
Yes, I checked the resource guide. It may be buried in there, but a search yielded nothing, nor did an hour of manually looking. I knew Henry was one who had been through this, couldn't remember who else. Jaydrvr
I've done this 3 times. It doesn't get easier, but the most important thing to remember is to connect a guide wire or string on the inside end before you pull it out. That alone can save a real annoying hour. NeverEasy
The trick is to use Google to search a specific site. rickeieio
Thanks to all. Yes, I tied a string to the old cable before pulling it out. I find it interesting that the Volvo guide mentions doing things that are difficult, like tilting the wheel all the way up. Duh, the cable's broken, so it won't tilt. It also mentions disconnecting the hood release cables. I didn't do that either. OTOH, while I'm waiting for the new part, I think I'll remove all the lines from the pass through and replace the o-rings. I'll never have a better shot at them than now. Jack Mayer
I would never tackle this job, so I'm in awe of Rick. I've seen it done. It is generally not easy. If you do it a bunch it seems to get easier - or so I'm told. This is a case where an experienced Volvo Tech is worth their weight in gold. My opinion only..... rickeieio
Jack, it's really not too bad. But then, I've been working on farm equipment for, uhhhh , too many years. But once you figure out the distorted logic of how it's assembled, it's pretty straight forward. If I had the new cable in hand, I think I could swap it out in two hours. rickeieio
Got the new cable, and it took just over an hour to put it in and button everything up. I had a couple of screw-ups, self inflicted, along the way, but it works as designed now. Gotta admit, I had someone with smaller hands install a couple of the fasteners. However, the steering column enclosure won't stay in place, because the bottoms of the pockets into which the mounting screws go, are all broken, save one. I'll look on line for the part numbers and determine whether to order new, or refurbish the originals. Unfortunately, there aren't any salvage yards near me. And the parts are cheap enough to to warrant ordering, rather than spending a day to drive 45 miles each way.
