Jacob catlett
Does anyone haul loads when not RVing? I have my CDL and understand that the insurance carried and elogs and registration would be different than registering as an RV. My thinking is I could afford a nicer HDT if if I could pick up hauls here and there. Outfitted for my families leisure travel picking up partial load runs as an excuse to travel doesn’t sound like a bad idea. With an extended frame and flatbed for my Jeep I’d still be able to haul a goose neck or similar.
Randyretired
Once you haul commercial of course the truck would need to be licensed commercial and insured as a commercial vehicle. Commercial insurance is expensive. You will need a lot of commercial trips just to pay the insurance bill. Commercial insurance often costs more each month than many of us pay per year. You may want to check all of the additional costs. Were you planning on using your own trailer? That opens up more things to consider. How is the load insured? This is now a business and the business costs versus profit will need a lot of planning. Randy 2001 Volvo VNL 42 Cummins ISX Autoshift
Jacob catlett
Hey I appreciate the quick response. I see it’d turn in to working as an Owner operator full time and RVing on the side real fast.
Randyretired
I also wonder if you could get enough loads with a setup like that? Randy 2001 Volvo VNL 42 Cummins ISX Autoshift
Randyretired
I sometimes pull a couple of my gooseneck trailers for my own use. I have inserted 5th wheel pins in place of the gooseneck coupler. That works just fine. I have a dump trailer and a flat bed. Non of this is commercial. Moresmoke
If I want to spend time driving a truck, there are plenty of people that will pay me to drive their truck. I will undoubtedly end up with more $$ in my pocket that way.

jenandjon
Our primary income comes from the farm but I do some trucking as a side hustle. I do not use my HDT for that. We have 3 trucks that are licensed commercial. . Some years we come out pretty good. Some years I feel like we just barely pay for the commercial insurance. So far this year is turning out pretty good for trucking. It is a pain to find loads for our specialty. It seems like nobody wants to pay up either. We have side dump trailers and haul grain. We also do some flat bedding. Hauling hay bales mostly. If you want to do some trucking on the side and make some good money you need to lease on with someone. I would not suggest you do it the way we do and just find loads here and there. I mean we stay busy on the farm but if we depended solely on trucking for income we would not be in business. We run local so no E logs. Right now I'm getting 600 miles a day with the side dump because of the flood. The best thing about hauling manure is: after you tell someone what you are doing, they don’t bother you any more, and usually don’t even want to talk on the phone. that is my experience anyway 🙂 nice 379 btw 98 379 with 12.7 DD LG Dodge w/5.9 CTD Chrome habit I’m trying to kick.
