gr8white
I am traveling from San Antonio to the Florida Keys soon and I am looking to stop somewhere along the way that is desolate and that I will be left alone so I can concentrate on a big work project. I have Verizon and Sprint and hoping one of them would work so I can get work done. Does anyone know of a place along the way where I can be by myself to get my project done? Then I can go to the keys with no work on my plate. Thanks!
2gypsies
What do you mean 'desolate'? Do you want to boondock? Do you want to be in a small town where you're not tempted to go siteseeing? Would a state park do? That area of travel is highly populated unless you get off the interstate. Are you willing to veer off the interstate? What state would you want to stay. to do your project... TX, Louisiana, Alabama, northern Florida? Give us a little more information and what size RV are you driving. gr8white
I am in San Antonio TX and I will be heading towards the FL Keys. I am pulling a 32 ft travel trailer with a GMC 2500 diesel. I would like to take the straightest line possible from San Antonio TX. When I say desolate, I mean a place where there are no RV's next to me. For example, my favorite spot in the country is in Green Ridge State Forest in Md. It is 10.00 per day and it is dry camping. When you are outside your RV, you see nothing but trees and woods. Each camp site is secluded and far from each other. Something like BLM Land maybe but there is no BLM land on this trip. I can dry camp or run off power. I am willing to get off the interstate. I also am a member of Passport America and Escapees if that helps. TX, Louisiana, Alabama are all fine. However, I rather not be by alligators. They scare the heck outa me.
chirakawa
Rule out Texas, too populated along your route which would be IH10. Also, anywhere you stop on a direct route between San Antonio and Florida Keys will have alligators, if there's water around (and there usually is). Texas also has very little public land to boondock on. Quote Everybody wanna hear the truth, but everybody tell a lie. Everybody wanna go to Heaven, but nobody want to die. 2gypsies
In Florida about 30 mi N of I-10 near the Alabama line is Blackwater River State Forest, Bear Lake Campground. Even though it's a campground there are two possible sites that look semi private on the map. #2 has good spacing between sites & nothing behind and across from it. #31 has nothing on the patio side. The cost is only $13.39/night & you can make a reservation. https://floridastateforests.reserveamerica.com/camping/bear-lake-campground-blackwater-river-state-forest/r/campgroundDetails.do?contractCode=FLFS&parkId=1120101 There's DeSoto National Forest near Gulfport, Mississippi, Big Biloxi Campground (Google it) You might also join BoondockersWelcome.com It shows a good amount along all states around I-10. These are typically private homes with acreage. Good luck!! trailertraveler
There are three National Forests in Florida, six in Mississippi and one in Louisiana. You will have to visit the website of each to find out the rules for vehicle camping outside of designated campgrounds and consult the Motor Vehicle Use Maps (MVUM) for areas open to vehicle camping. Once you locate an area, you can check it out on Google Earth. Some Florida Wildlife Management Areas have primitive campgrounds. Florida State Forests have campgrounds and I believe some allow vehicle camping outside of designated campgrounds. Checkout the Free Campsites and Ultimate Public Campgrounds Project websites for public lands open to camping.

Hill_Country
Not to far off the most direct route is Padre Island National Seashore near Corpus Christi or Magnolia Beach near Port Lavaca. Either one will give you about as much, or as little, desolation as you wish. Your need for cell booster/antenna will be directly proportional to your level of desolation. agesilaus
Florida also has state forests in addition to National Forests. There is a CG, dry camping but water available, in Goethe State Forest near Newberry FL. I have never seen anyone camping there and have been thru there a number of times. The sites are wide pull thrus. Sites are shaded. This is a somewhat new cg, unadvertised and mostly unknown. Let me know if you are interested for directions. It's about 15-20 miles from I-75 in between Newberry and Bronson FL. I think the fee is $10/night for non Florida residents. Other than that Ocala NF has dispersed camping you can certainly find an isolated undeveloped site. Probably can do the same in other NF along your path Edited January 18, 2020 by agesilaus
